EU announces rejection of "deal of the century"

The European Union announced its non-recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the territories it had occupied since 1967, days after the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump.

The European Union’s foreign policy official, Jusep Borrell, said the US proposal for peace in the Middle East “is not in line with internationally agreed standards.”

He said: The final status issues should be decided through direct negotiations between the two parties.

The Arab League announced, after an emergency meeting held at the level of foreign ministers in Cairo, on Saturday, "rejecting the American peace plan as it does not meet the minimum rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people."

It stressed that it "violates the terms of reference of the peace process based on international law and United Nations resolutions."

Backed by the Arab consensus to reject the plan, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced, during the Arab League meeting, the severing of "any relationship, including security," with Israel and the United States, stressing his freedom from his obligations under the 1993 Oslo accords.
