Venezuelan parliament speaker Juan Guaido, who declared himself acting president, called on his supporters to protest on Wednesday and Saturday against President Nicolas Maduro and demand new elections.

The president of the National Assembly, which is controlled by the opposition in a video on Twitter, called on his supporters to organize a "peaceful" strike to paralyze the country then to a "major national and international march" on Saturday.

The United States, Canada, Australia and several Latin American countries have recognized Guaido as president of Venezuela, while six European countries (Spain, France, Germany, Britain, Portugal and the Netherlands) have set an 8-day deadline for calling for elections which Maduro rejected.

Oil-rich Venezuela is experiencing an economic crisis, with inflation expected to reach 10 million% in 2019. The country is suffering from shortages of food and medicine.
