US Secretary of State Robert Palladino said in a written statement Friday that Jeffrey would carry out the duties of Syria's Special Envoy and US special envoy to the International Coalition to fight “Daesh.”

He noted that Jeffrey "will coordinate with the US allies to achieve his country's goals in Syria and Iraq, which is the complete elimination of “Daesh” and the withdrawal of American soldiers from Syria."

On December 22, the US Special Envoy to the International Coalition, Brett McGurk, resigned; in protest at Trump's decision to withdraw his troops from Syria, two days after the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis for the same reasons.
