Turkish Police on Friday arrested 12 people, including 2 prominent academics, in the investigation of human rights activist and businessman Othman Kavala and his cultural organization.

Kavala was jailed awaiting trial a year ago and accused of trying to fall the government as part of an investigation into the network Ankara accuses of carrying out a failed coup in 2016.

Human rights groups and members of the European Parliament have repeatedly called for his release but have yet to be indicted.

International human rights groups accused Erdogan's government of using the coup attempt and belonging to Gulen to arrest thousands of opponents and imprison them.
