UN discussed with Iraq about prosecuting IS mercenaries

The United Nations (UN) discussed with Iraq on Wednesday about the mechanism of the implementation of Security Council’s resolution 2379 of 2017 on IS mercenary crimes.

The spokesman for the Supreme Judicial Council in Iraq Abdul Sattar al-Birqdar said in a statement that the Judge Faik Zaidan who is the head of the council received the special adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the head of the international investigation team on the crimes of IS Karim Khan and the delegation accompanying him, and they discussed the crimes committed by IS mercenaries in Iraq and the mechanism of implementing Security Council resolution 2379 of 2017.

The statement added, "The talks also focused on the coordination of the work for the cooperation of the judicial authorities in the Republic of Iraq with the international investigation team in everything related to the crimes committed by IS mercenaries.

It is worth mentioning that in September, 2017, the UN Security Council adopted the resolution 2379 about the accountability of IS mercenaries for the crimes they committed in Iraq, including those that amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
