Xêrka neighborhood ... severely suffering, municipality promises though late

Xêrka neighborhood’s people have been suffering for two decades due to negligence of municipality and they are suffering from the roads and streets, and the lack of channels of sewage, spread of garbage, cutoff of water in addition to the most important problem is animal barn (stables) within the residential areas of the neighborhood. Many of the residents were forced to move from the neighborhood to other neighborhoods.

Pits and surface sanitary drainage lead to the spread of insects and diseases

Due to the lack of sewerage in Xêrka neighborhood, the villagers were forced to dig "sewage pits" in front of the houses and dig sewage pipes for drainage. These surface sewage leads to the spread of smells permanently and the spread of harmful insects, which led to the emergence of many skin diseases as well as asthma, and lead to contamination of drinking water, according to Hussein Mohammed, a resident of the neighborhood.

Due to the muddy streets, cars cannot enter into the neighborhood

During winter season, people’s suffering is getting worse due to problems of muddy roads, pits and ponds, a citizen, Islam Ali said that the parents cannot access the example of hospitals in emergency cases because of the poor roads and streets in the neighborhood where cars cannot enter the neighborhood.

Commune : We have not received only promises from the municipality

In this context, The Co-chair of Martyr Çîçek's commune in Xêrka neighborhood Kalthouma Majid said that she has been living in the neighborhood for 16 years, and the neighborhood is marginalized from all aspects of service and health. "The people of the neighborhood suffer from the spread of chronic diseases, especially in children and the municipality do not move till now to help the people just we have received promises, despite our appeal to them many times to find a solution to the problems that the residents of the neighborhood are suffering from."

Animal barns, are added to the concerns of the inhabitants of the neighborhood

Muntaha Mohammad, a resident of the neighborhood, says that the neighborhood is not eligible for housing due to the spread of "animals barns" in the center of the houses. "The number of animals’ barns exceeds the number of houses." Many residents were forced to move from the neighborhood after suffering from diseases such as asthma and skin allergies. She noted that doctors confirm that the cause of these diseases is spread of mosquitoes due to the spread of cattle manure. "More than 100 families live in Xêrka neighborhood and we have not received any support from the municipality and the concerned authorities."

Municipality: shortage in machineries and high costs is the most of obstacles

Hawar news agency (ANHA)'s correspondents transferred the suffering of the people to the People's Municipality in Derik city, where the Co-chair of the municipality, Hussein Adam, stressed that the municipality lacked the necessary machineries to implement the service requirements in the neighborhood. He also noted that the sewage project in the neighborhood costs large sums, especially that the municipality has changed the sewage that was previously poured in Borza dam.

Urgent solutions and follow-up with parents to end their suffering

Adam stressed that the municipality is currently studying the status of Xêrka neighborhood in order to find solutions to the problems faced by the residents. He also noted that the municipality will urgently work to correct some things, especially in relation to spraying pesticides and deporting garbage urgently. He also confirmed that they are holding a meeting with parents to discuss service matters and ways to solve these problems.

Adam continued, "The roads will be asphalted in the neighborhood during the month of September by the municipality, and animals’ barns will be moved outside of the city and if the owners did not comply with the decision will be subject to penalties and fines according to the laws of the municipalities bodies in al-Jazeera region."

The administrator in the Protection and Environment Department of the People's Municipality, Shilan Ali, said that the municipality suffers from a shortage of workers and machineries for the removal of garbage despite the criticism of the people. "Despite the lack of materials and machineries, we are doing everything in our power to find solutions to the problems that have been suffered by people, and we are seeking to increase the number of  machineries to be able to remove garbage from the neighborhoods twice a week.
