EU Council extends sanctions on Syrian regime

The European Union Council issued a statement on the decision to extend the sanctions on the Syrian regime and its allies for another year until June 2019 due to the continuing repression against the civilian population in conformity with the policy of the Union towards Syria.

The statement said, "The council has updated the information concerned to the persons and sides on the list of sanctions as two persons' names have been deleted because they died, and the list now includes 259 people, and 67 parties, targeting sanctions; travel ban and freeze the assets."

The statement noted, "In the wider, the sanctions imposed on Syria include the oil embargo, restrictions on certain investments, freezing of assets of the Central Bank of Syria to the European Union, in addition to the restriction on the import of equipment or techniques that may be used for internal repression, or for monitoring the internet and telephone calls."

On January 23, 2012, the EU Foreign Ministers increased the severity of the sanctions on Syria and added 22 other people and 8 institutions to the list of the banned persons and groups.
