Women: Holding criminals, killers accountable is a prerequisite for building Syria’s future

Women from the city of Jal Agha in al-Jazira canton pointed to the continued presence of women’s killers in positions of power in Damascus without accountability or punishment. They warned that this situation poses a direct threat to the lives and future of Syrian women.

They also affirmed that the transitional government in Syria still harbors suspects involved in the assassination of Kurdish politician Hevrin Khalaf and the commission of war crimes in areas occupied by Turkey and its mercenaries, such as Serê Kaniyê, Tal Abyad, and Afrin, provoking widespread anger among popular and women’s circles.

Zeinab Rasheed described these appointments as "a stain on the face of humanity," adding that appointing women’s killers to official positions "legitimizes their crimes and opens the door for other criminals to escape justice," stressing that this "destabilizes the region and threatens women."

Meanwhile, Mona Al-Awad said, "Building a democratic Syria first requires holding war criminals who have committed atrocities against Syrians accountable." She added that appointing individuals accused of serious crimes "only paves the way for the continuation of massacres in the country," warning that the rise of mercenaries to positions of power would turn Syria "into a swamp of terrorism" and reinforce patriarchal policies that undermine the rights of women and civilians.

Nasrin Issa stated that "war criminals belong behind bars, not in positions of authority," and that holding them accountable is "an essential condition for achieving justice and building a Syria free of women’s killers." She added that the women of Jal Agha continue to follow the path of Hevrin Khalaf and all the martyrs in demanding accountability for those responsible for crimes and violations.
