Washington approves $130 million for SDF in 2026 defense budget

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved the 2026 Defense Department budget, allocating $130 million in support of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The funding package covers salaries, training, armament, logistical assistance, and maintenance.

The total budget for the Department of Defense—still referred to by some as the “War Department”—for fiscal year 2026 is set at approximately $961.6 billion. This includes assistance earmarked for the SDF, the Peshmerga, and Iraqi security forces.

Support for the Syrian Democratic Forces

The SDF will receive $130 million—$17 million less than the previous year. Of this sum, $65 million is allocated for salaries, $15.6 million for training and armament, $32.4 million for logistical support, and $1.5 million for maintenance and related services.

Support for the Peshmerga Forces

The budget allocates $61.014 million to equip and support the Kurdish Peshmerga forces—an increase of $4.7 million over 2025. This includes $11.80 million for armament, $5.321 million for ammunition, $27.507 million for military vehicles, and $17.106 million for uniforms and other equipment.

Support for the Iraqi Security Forces

The Pentagon has designated $48.419 million for Iraq’s Ministry of Defense, reflecting a reduction of $141 million compared to 2025. This package includes 100 Hellfire missiles valued at $12 million, as well as $13 million for communications systems and equipment.

Support for Iraq’s Counter-Terrorism Service

The 2026 budget provides $65.595 million for the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service—an increase of $56 million over the previous year. Of this, $32 million is directed toward training and $33 million toward weapons and military equipment.
