The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) warned today that Lebanon is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis that could turn into a catastrophe, nearly a month after the outbreak of war in the Middle East.

The agency reported that more than one million people in the country have been forced to flee their homes since March 2, when fighting erupted between Israel and Hezbollah.

Carolina Lindholm Billing, UNHCR Representative in Lebanon, told journalists in Geneva via a briefing from Beirut: “The situation remains extremely worrying, and there is a real risk of a humanitarian catastrophe.”
