UN welcomes agreement between SDF, Interim Govt

The UN Secretary-General welcomed the recent agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Interim Government, calling for its urgent implementation and for ensuring the protection of civilians and the safe return of displaced Kurds to their homes.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the agreement reached between the Interim Government and the Syrian Democratic Forces, urging its prompt implementation, particularly regarding the peaceful integration of northeastern Syria, the protection of Kurdish citizens’ rights, the safe and voluntary return of displaced persons, and efforts toward the country’s reconstruction.

Guterres emphasized in a statement from his office the importance of fully honoring commitments, prioritizing stability in Syria and the region, and ensuring civilians’ protection and the provision of a safe and dignified life for them.

Meanwhile, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria welcomed the ceasefire agreement and called for continued efforts to protect civilians, including allowing the return of displaced populations and delivering humanitarian aid to northeastern Syria.

The commission also stressed the necessity of adhering to international humanitarian law in any future operations and protecting civilian infrastructure.
