UN: We closely monitoring developments in Al-Sumaria neighborhood

The United Nations said late yesterday that it was following with concern developments in the Al-Sumaria neighborhood of Damascus, including reports of eviction threats and reports of violations against innocent civilians, including women and children.

It urged "restraint and refraining from any hasty or violent measures."

UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric confirmed at his daily press briefing that Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen is closely monitoring recent developments in the country.

Dujarric stressed the importance of carefully addressing complex issues related to housing, land, and property, as well as transitional justice issues, to ensure the protection of civilians based on the rule of law and in accordance with international standards.

He explained that the United Nations views these issues as fundamental pillars of any future political process aimed at achieving stability in Syria, stressing that the protection of civilians remains a top priority in all UN efforts.

The Al-Sumaria neighborhood, west of Damascus, witnessed a security escalation a few days ago after Damascus government forces closed most of the area's main entrances, keeping only two entrances open: one for people and one for vehicles.

According to ANHA agency's sources, this escalation is an extension of a previous siege the area was subjected to under the pretext of a population census. During this siege, food and basic necessities were prevented from entering, exacerbating the living conditions of the residents.

Residents confirmed that the neighborhood is witnessing gradual displacement attempts, through notifications from the Damascus government demanding that residents leave their homes and properties and depart.
