Speaking on Thursday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a stark warning about the rapidly evolving situation, stressing that the region stands “on the brink of a wider war” that could have global repercussions.

Guterres urged an immediate cessation of strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as attacks launched by Iran against its neighbors, emphasizing the need to contain the escalation before it spirals out of control.

In remarks to journalists at UN headquarters in New York City, he said: “We are on the verge of a broader war that could sweep across the Middle East, with serious consequences worldwide.”
