UN warns of deterioration in humanitarian situation in Kobani amid road closures

In a statement published on its website, OCHA warned of a grave humanitarian decline in Kobani and its rural areas, as all roads leading to the city remain closed and shortages of essential supplies persist.

Kobani and its countryside have been under siege for nearly a week, imposed by mercenaries affiliated with the Syrian Interim Government alongside mercenaries of the Turkish occupying state, following their takeover of positions in the city’s southern countryside. The Interim Government has prevented any humanitarian or commercial movement to and from Kobani, while continuing to issue threats of launching attacks on the area.

The office reported that humanitarian partners operating in Kobani have expressed growing concern over the situation of civilians, with power, water, and internet supplies disrupted, hindering residents’ access to basic services. Reports have also begun to emerge of shortages in food supplies and other essential goods.

OCHA noted that health facilities remain operational but are facing shortages of medicines, adding that the UN team is holding discussions with authorities in Aleppo to explore ways to provide urgent support to the city.
