UN Secretary-General meets representatives of 18 Syrian women's organisations in Damascus

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres met on Sunday with representatives of 18 Syrian women's organisations during a meeting held at the Sheraton Hotel in Damascus.

Among the participants was Roken Ahmed, a member of the Committee for Relations and Democratic Policy Agreements representing Kongra Star.

According to Roken Ahmed, the 18 women's organisations had organised themselves in advance into three working groups and held a series of online meetings to discuss the situation in Syria.

The three groups prepared separate memoranda, all of which were presented and discussed during the meeting. The documents addressed the status of women, the economic conditions, issues of justice, and the broader social situation in Syria. One of the memoranda also highlighted violations and measures affecting residents of the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah neighbourhoods in Aleppo, as well as developments on the Syrian coast and in Suwayda. It further stressed the need to protect the rights of the Kurdish people and to address the consequences of the Arab Belt policies.

For his part, António Guterres said he would give careful consideration to the demands outlined in the memoranda, noting that the United Nations is aware of the limited representation of women in the Syrian Interim Government and that the issue is being discussed with the authorities.

Kongra Star also submitted a separate memorandum to the UN Secretary-General.
