UN Human Rights Chief calls for accountability for violence in Sweida

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, on Friday urged the transitional government in Syria to take responsibility for the recent human rights violations in the city of Sweida, stressing the need to respect international law and ensure accountability for those responsible for acts of violence.

In a statement, Volker Türk called on the Syrian transitional government to guarantee justice and accountability for the killings and violations that have taken place in Sweida, in southern Syria.

Türk said, "The bloodshed and violence must stop, and the top priority must be the protection of all people, in line with international human rights law."

He emphasized the need for "independent, prompt, and transparent investigations into all acts of violence, and for those responsible to be held accountable."

The UN Human Rights Office pointed to “credible reports of widespread violations, including executions carried out by security forces and other armed elements, including Druze and Bedouins.”

The city of Sweida and its surrounding countryside in southern Syria have witnessed a serious escalation since July 13, when groups affiliated with the transitional government launched attacks that have led to the deaths of over 500 people.
