Two meetings in Amuda, Girkê Legê to organize communes’ work, empower women

As part of a series of public meetings scheduled for administrators and members of communes across various regions of North and East Syria, aimed at revitalizing the committees of the communes, two separate meetings were held today in the cities of Amuda and Girkê Legê in Jazira Canton.

In Amuda, the meeting took place at the Democratic Union Party (PYD) hall and was attended by female co-chairs and members of civil society institutions. Meanwhile, the meeting in Girkê Legê was held at the Workers’ Union office in the city of Rmelan and was attended by female administrators and commune co-chairs.

Noroz Khalil, a member of the Kongra Star Coordination in Jazira Canton, spoke about the current situation in the region and explained the commune system, emphasizing the central role of women within it. She recalled the message of Leader Abdullah Ocalan, in which he expressed his confidence in women’s ability to lead work within the communes, stressing that the achievements made so far are rooted in his philosophy of women's and society’s liberation.

Noroz added that the co-chair system has been a unique experience, contributing to the development of a cooperative society between men and women, and empowering women to manage their own affairs within the Autonomous Administration. She emphasized the need to activate the communes, especially women’s communes, and to improve their performance to ensure broader and more effective participation.

Hamida Ferman, another member of the Kongra Star Coordination, also stressed that activating women’s communes is a key step in developing women’s work in society. She pointed out that thousands of women across Syria face various forms of violations, which necessitates enhancing women’s roles and raising awareness about the systems of Kongra Star and the communes. She affirmed that every woman is considered a representative of Kongra Star and must be well-informed about the conditions of her neighborhood and surroundings.

In Girkê Legê, Sozdar Qasim, a Kongra Star administrator from Qamishlo, delivered a speech highlighting the importance of empowering women within the communes. She emphasized that their participation in organizational and administrative work is a fundamental pillar for building a democratic society.

Sozdar also called for increasing women's presence in committees and initiatives, stating that women are not just partners in the commune but are essential to its development and stability.

She stressed that organizing women within the communes ensures that their voices reach decision-making centers and strengthens community oversight of services. She also pointed to the importance of regular attendance at meetings and establishing direct communication channels between the communes and the Workers’ Union to address service-related and rights-related issues.

At the conclusion of both meetings, a discussion was opened for the co-chairs and administrators in attendance. Several challenges facing the communes were addressed, most notably the lack of practical activation and insufficient inclusion of women in decision-making processes. A number of proposals were made, including revitalizing women’s committees, enabling them to prepare independent plans, and contributing actively to decision-making.

The Kongra Star Coordination documented all the observations and suggestions from both meetings, which will be discussed in upcoming sessions with the aim of reaching a comprehensive working mechanism that enhances the role of women within the commune system.
