At least 12 people were killed and three others abducted in an attack by gunmen on a mining site in the village of Atosu, Plateau State, in central Nigeria, according to local sources.

Daliob Solomon Mwanteri, head of the Berom Youth Mulders Association, said that residents identified the attackers as armed men from the Fulani tribe.

He added that the attack also left five people with gunshot wounds, who were taken to the hospital for treatment.

For his part, Nigerian police spokesman Alfred Alabo confirmed that investigations are still underway to uncover the circumstances of the attack and apprehend those responsible.

This attack comes amid ongoing insecurity in Plateau State, one of the most volatile regions in Nigeria's Middle Belt, which has witnessed years of continuous conflict between farmers and herders over ethnic and religious differences.
