Tunisian journalist: "Women, Life, Freedom" uprising united women
A Tunisian journalist confirmed that the slogan "Jin, Jiyan, Azadî" has become a reference for women's freedom worldwide and a symbol of resistance against all forms of oppression, tyranny, and exploitation. She viewed the killing of Jina Amini as the death of all women who believe in freedom and democracy in the Middle East.
On the occasion of the second anniversary of the uprising "Jin, Jiyan, Azad" ("Women, Life, Freedom") that erupted in Eastern Kurdistan and Iran following the murder of the young Kurdish woman Jina Amini by the Iranian morality police in mid-September 2022, Tunisian activist and journalist Zahra al-Mashriqi sent a message of support for the struggle of women in Iran.
Zahra al-Mashriqi greeted all the women at the beginning of her speech, saying: "From Tunisia, the cradle of Arab revolutions, I salute the women in Iran, Syria, Iraq, and all the women in the world who are fighting for their freedom."
The Tunisian journalist pointed out that the slogan "Jin, Jiyan, Azadî" has transcended regional borders and become a global slogan. She added, "This slogan has triumphed for women's freedom and said no to mandatory hijab, as it has become a symbol and reference for women's freedom around the world. It has reached India, the Maghreb, and North Africa in general, and has become a banner of resistance against forms of oppression, tyranny, exploitation, and denial that women face as a result of political conflicts among international powers, where women have been the first victims."
She emphasized that the uprising of "Women, Life, Freedom" in Iran has resonated beyond Syria, Iraq, and Turkey, reaching Asia, India, and North Africa, where women's voices have risen with cries of "Yes to freedom, yes to life, yes to governance," and "No to sexual, economic, and political exploitation."
Regarding the killing of Jina Amini on September 16, 2022, Zahra believed that "Jina was not killed alone; all women who believe in freedom and democracy in the Middle East and North Africa were killed as well." She stated, "When Jina Amini was assassinated because of the hijab she was forced to wear, the women of the Middle East were also assassinated."
The Tunisian journalist Zahra al-Mashriqi said at the end of her talk: "All women must fight against patriarchal mentality with one hand. We have the right to exercise our public rights and to be active in the political field, and no one should mediate for us. Today, we are fighting against patriarchal mentality with one hand."
