Students at Martyr Abdel Bari Mohammed School in the city of Derbasiyah issued a statement on Monday, read by student Niaz Sino, expressing their rejection of the decision to reduce Kurdish-language classes to three per week.

In their statement, the students stressed their commitment to their right to learn their mother tongue and preserve their cultural and linguistic identity.

The statement emphasized that a mother tongue is an essential part of a person’s roots and identity, and that losing it means losing part of one’s sense of belonging and cultural memory.

It also noted that language is not merely a means of communication, but is closely linked to identity and belonging, and that preserving it is a collective responsibility, particularly through education.

The students reiterated their rejection of reducing Kurdish-language instruction to three classes per week and stressed the need to protect their right to learn their mother tongue and ensure the continuity of Kurdish-language education in schools.
