Student council of universities in NE Syria holds founding assembly

The Student Council of the Universities in North and East Syria convened its inaugural founding assembly today at Al-Sharq University in Raqqa Canton. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, the Council of Universities, the Education and Teaching Authority, as well as students from Rojava University, Al-Sharq University, and Kobani University.

The session commenced with a moment of silence in honor of the martyrs. Samira Youssef, the Co-Chair of the Education and Teaching Authority, delivered an address highlighting the fundamental role of education in shaping individuals and societies, emphasizing its importance in fostering progress and prosperity. She affirmed that the establishment of the Student Council reflects students’ awareness of their role and responsibility in shaping their educational future.

Media Hamsho, the Co-Chair of the Council of Universities in the Region of North and East Syria, welcomed the attendees and underlined the pivotal role students play in academic life. She stressed the importance of dialogue and openness in cultivating an educational environment conducive to ambition and innovation.

The assembly reviewed the internal regulations of the Student Council and concluded with a final statement in which students reaffirmed their commitment to contributing to the construction of a democratic society founded on the principles of equality and justice, while rejecting all forms of discrimination and racism.

The statement also emphasized the importance of enhancing student representation in academic and international forums and underscored the need for student unity across Syria, calling for resistance to authoritarian interference that impedes democratic engagement within universities.

The formation of this council marks a significant step toward organizing student activity and strengthening the role of students in shaping the academic and societal landscape in the Region of North and East Syria.
