Sozdar Avesta: Syria's issues can only only be solved through dialogue

KCK General Presidency Council Member Sozdar Avesta spoke about the situation in North and East Syria and Syria in the second part of her interview on Stêrk TV. Her assessment was as follows:

"The issue of North and East Syria and Syria is a very important issue, and it can be resolved in North and East Syria and with the Syrian Transitional Government. Therefore, the biggest obstacle to resolve the problems in Syria is the Turkish state and Turkish officials, and this is noteworthy. How? And why are they obstructing it? Because the AKP government wants the transitional government in Syria to be under its complete control. It wants to manipulate the transitional government and use it for its own interests, and that is what it is doing."

To solve the problems in the region, it must first distance itself from this situation. For example, on March 10, 2025, an agreement was reached between the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and al-Julani. They publicly signed the eight-article agreement. Immediately afterward, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan traveled to Damascus with his delegation. The next day, they signed a temporary constitution, which did not include anything related to the Kurds. He immediately intervened and abolished it. Several meetings were also held recently between the commander of the SDF and al-Julani, and once again, Hakan Fidan and Erdoğan issued threats. They want this conflict to continue in Syria. They are not only oppressing the Kurdish people, but also the people of North and East Syria, the unity of the peoples, and the project of a democratic state that includes all peoples. The people of North and East Syria continue their struggle for democracy and defend themselves by all means. North and East Syria always strives to develop a democratic life for all Syrians, not just a part of it.

The people living in Syria derive their strength from the model developed in North and East Syria. For example, a massacre was committed against the Druze in Sweida, forcing them to declare their independence. Recently, the Alawite community formed its own councils. These communities cannot survive with the one-sided mentality promoted by the Turkish state. Thousands of Alawite and Druze women have been kidnapped, and Alawite women have been subjected to genocide—not just women, but also the people and children. How can the people of North and East Syria live with such a mentality? Erdogan is also using the issue of North and East Syria as a pretext to create a new impasse in northern Kurdistan and Turkey. This is also where the mentality of the Turkish state and Turkish officials becomes apparent. The problems of North and East Syria and Syria belong to Syria itself, and above all, the Turkish state must withdraw from the areas it occupies. The problems of the Syrian people must be left to it. The Syrian translational Government can reach an understanding with North and East Syria and resolve its problems through dialogue. The solution, of course, lies in building a democratic society and democratizing the Syrian Republic.

Without a democratic republic in Syria, the problems cannot be resolved. North and East Syria is currently the most peaceful region, where understanding prevails and autonomy prevails. There is the will of women, the will of youth, and the will of all peoples.

Some discussions have taken place recently, and we don't consider them negative. Officials from the Syrian transitional government say we can discuss anything except secession. The Kurds and the people of North and East Syria have never proposed dividing Syrian territory or establishing another state there. There is no such concept. Therefore, if others withdraw, they can reach an agreement. The best thing Syria can achieve is peace and a democratic society. The democratization of the Syrian Republic is the demand of all the peoples of Syria.

However, if they insist on imposing their own approach, the authorities in North and East Syria are preparing for this and will defend the rights of the people. They have been attacked dozens of times, and provocations are currently underway, including at the Tishreen Dam. Furthermore, some institutions are being attacked, and the Turkish state is supporting these attacks. There is a Turkish foreign minister, you might think he is the foreign minister of Damascus. This person has previously said: “We will launch a few missiles from Syria into Turkey, and that will be a reason for us to enter Syria.” So, they start wars whenever they want, and use other methods whenever they want. They must stop creating chaos in NE Syria. The process followed in Northern Kurdistan and Turkey is different from that followed in NE Syria. NE Syria will solve its problems with the Syrian Transitional Government, Southern Kurdistan will solve its problems with Iraq, and Eastern Kurdistan will solve its problems with Iran. The mentality of interfering in the problems surrounding them without solving their own problems is a hegemonic unilateral mentality that seeks to impose its reality in the most complete way. No one will accept that. As far as we know, the government of NE Syria is ready to confront this mentality and will not allow interference from any external force.

Women's rights must be included in the constitution. Women must organize themselves of their own free will, participate in all institutions, engage in politics, and struggle. The will of all peoples must be recognized. Only with this concept can the problems be resolved.
