Sit-in in Aleppo demands accountability for death of Mohammad Ghamira

Saadallah al-Jabiri Square in central Aleppo witnessed a sit-in today attended by young people and local residents, in protest against what they described as violations inside detention centers and prisons affiliated with the transitional government. They also called for the circumstances surrounding the death of young man Mohammad Ghamira to be revealed and for those responsible to be held accountable.

The sit-in came following Ghamira’s death after he was detained at the Al-Haffah police station and later transferred to a hospital, amid calls for a transparent and independent investigation to determine the circumstances of his death.

Participants called for the circumstances surrounding Ghamira’s death to be disclosed and for anyone found responsible to be held accountable. They also demanded an end to any practices involving torture or ill-treatment in detention facilities and guarantees that such practices would not be repeated.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 76 detainees have died under torture in prisons and detention centers affiliated with Syria’s transitional government since the fall of the Baathist regime, including 61 cases in 2025 and 15 cases in 2026.
