Serekaniye displaced committee discusses return with Red Cross

A delegation from the Serekaniye Displaced Persons Committee met with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to discuss the situation of displaced people and developments regarding their return, stressing the importance of ensuring a safe and dignified return, protecting their rights, and providing the necessary humanitarian assistance to returnees.

The delegation met today with Head of the ICRC Office in Hasakah Sebastien Fustier and his accompanying team to discuss the situation of displaced people, developments related to the return process, and the challenges facing the region.

The delegation outlined the conditions of displaced people and the challenges they face, as well as efforts made in coordination with relevant parties to ensure a “safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable” return. It stressed the importance of security guarantees and protecting displaced people’s rights, particularly their property and housing rights and their right to live safely after returning.

The delegation also emphasized the need to provide returnees with the necessary assistance to help create suitable conditions for their return and resettlement.

For their part, the ICRC representatives expressed their interest in these humanitarian concerns and the ICRC’s readiness to continue carrying out its humanitarian role, including mediation and providing support and assistance through relevant humanitarian organizations and UN agencies.

Both sides stressed the importance of continued communication and coordination among all relevant parties to ensure the protection of displaced people and safeguard their rights during and after the return process.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides agreed to continue coordination and consultations to ensure that humanitarian considerations are taken into account.
