SDF congratulates Assyrian-Babylonian New Year "Akitu", urges its recognition as official holiday

In a statement issued on the occasion of Akitu, the SDC extended its heartfelt congratulations to the Assyrian-Syriac people in Syria, highlighting their deep historical and cultural presence in the country.

The statement noted that Syria’s ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity is a source of strength and richness rather than division, stressing the need to preserve this shared heritage and to work on drafting a national constitution that guarantees the rights of all communities and enhances their participation in building the country’s future.

The SDC Council affirmed that the envisioned Syria can only be complete as a democratic and pluralistic state, where every identity has its natural and protected place, within a unifying national identity that embraces everyone without exclusion or assimilation. The SDC highlighted that celebrating Akitu embodies values of renewal and hope and reflects the spirit of pluralism that characterizes Syria.

Furthermore, the SDC called for the recognition of Akitu as an official national holiday, in line with its historical and cultural significance, demonstrating the future state’s commitment to respecting diversity and the rights of all its communities.
