Sara Organization: statement of Women's Affairs' head not appropriate for struggle of Syrian women

The statements of the head of women's affairs in the Syrian interim government, Aisha al-Debs, sparked a wave of widespread protests among Syrians, especially among Syrian women.

Over the past hours, many Syrians, ranging from activists on virtual social media to politicians and journalists, have harshly criticized Aisha al-Debs.

This came after Aisha al-Debs appeared in a television interview in which she explained that she "will not accept any opinion of feminist organizations or others that contradict their ideological orientation, or are incompatible with the government model," which sparked criticism against her, as some commentators considered that "the official pursues a repressive policy," as they described.

Sara also argued that Aisha al-Debs' ideology "rejects women from holding positions and entering the labor market" and stresses "a return to Islamic law only, especially in the judicial field."

The statement pointed out that such statements further complicate the Syrian scene, and that they are "far from the different cultures in terms of sects that exist inside Syria, pluralistic, democratic and decentralized."

Sara said in its statement that these statements "are a direct accusation against us and a derogation of our rights, because in its ideology it did not reach the thought of women in all Syrian governorates, including the NE Syria," and stressed that "it should have opened a discussion at the dialogue tables and know the scope and work of what women's organizations are doing."
