Rising violence against women in Southern Kurdistan during June

In a special report, Roj News revealed the escalation of violations and crimes against women in Southern Kurdistan during the past month of June, highlighting a series of alarming incidents.

According to the agency’s statistics, on June 2, young woman Sara Faridoun, a 12th-grade student, committed suicide in the Benslawa neighborhood of Hawler Governorate.

On June 16, a 26-year-old woman, identified only by her initials (N.A.A.), was shot and killed by her husband in the Zakho administration center.

On June 22, student Ashna Khasro, who was studying in the 11th grade in the Soran administration, died under mysterious circumstances after her body was completely burned due to being doused with a highly flammable substance.

On June 24, security forces in Sulaymaniyah province arrested four women, teachers and activists, named Shahla Ali, Munira Abdullah, Noor Fariqi, and Dilsuz Zankanah, during their participation in protests by teachers and employees. The report noted that the arrests occurred without judicial warrants and involved the use of violence.

Additionally, statistics showed that the first five months of 2025 witnessed the killing of 14 women, the mysterious deaths of 10 women, and two women sustaining serious injuries due to violence.

These figures highlight the worsening violence against women in Southern Kurdistan, amid increasing calls from civil society organizations and women’s institutions to expedite the enactment of strict laws to protect women and ensure a safe environment for them throughout the region.
