Rainwater leaks into tents of IDPs in Newroz Camp in Derik

Rainfall has continued across al- Jazira canton since yesterday, and the heavy showers have led to the formation of large water pools throughout the area, as well as water leaking into homes, especially in low-lying neighborhoods.

Nawroz Camp, which hosts displaced families from Afrin, al-Shahba, Serekaniye, and Gire Spi, was not spared from the damage. In particular, about 100 tents that were recently erected to shelter displaced people from Afrin and al-Shahba, who had arrived from Raqqa and Tabqa following the attacks that struck the region in mid-January were significantly affected.

According to observations by our agency’s correspondent, most of these newly installed tents, numbering around 100 have experienced water leakage due to their rapid construction and the absence of concrete flooring, which allowed rainwater to seep inside and damage them.

To monitor the situation of the displaced families in the camp, an emergency committee was formed within the camp. The committee includes 10 members from the camp administration, along with representatives from the five communes in the camp, which currently hosts 1,165 families, with a total population of approximately 5,896 people.

The committee toured the camp and inspected the damage affecting the newly constructed tents.

Displaced families have appealed to the relevant authorities and humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently, calling for swift solutions to their suffering and for improvements to the tents and essential infrastructure to prevent further rainwater leakage.
