Qartashk prison suspends visits after power outage protest

Human rights reports indicate that the administration of Qartashk Prison in Iran has imposed new restrictions on prominent female detainees, including Golrokh Iraee, Sakineh Parvaneh, Arghavan Fallahi, Neda Fotouhi, Mina Mashhadi, Bariush Moslemei, Nasim Gholami Semyari, Marzieh Farsi, Zahra Sarf, Azar Karvandi, Nahid Khodajoo, and Forough Taghizadeh, among others.

This came after a group of detainees chanted slogans protesting the power outages. This prompted the prison administration to deny the detainees family visits and meetings with their lawyers. Neda Fotouhi and Zahra Sarf also faced new charges of "insulting Khamenei" for their participation in these protests.

It is worth noting that Qartashk Prison has faced domestic and international criticism for years due to its inhumane conditions, severe overcrowding, and lack of sanitary facilities. Restrictions on visits and basic rights of detainees have also been repeatedly imposed after peaceful protests. Human rights activists assert that the ban on visits constitutes a clear violation of humanitarian and legal standards, depriving families of their natural right to check on the well-being of their loved ones, at a time when repressive policies against female political prisoners in Iran are escalating.
