Qamishlo marks World Theatre Day with performances honoring Martyr Yekta Herkol

Members of the Martyrs’ Families Council, along with theatre and art enthusiasts from the city, attended the event held in Qamishlo.

After observing a minute of silence, the co-chair of the TEV-ÇAND Movement (Movement for Culture and Art), Khalil Tahlo, delivered a speech, saying:

“Today is World Theatre Day, which also marks the day of the martyrdom of theatre artist Yekta Herkol, who sacrificed his life to make the world aware of his people’s existence and ignited the flame of resistance against oppression. We will continue to follow the path of our martyrs, who aspired to a free life, until we achieve their goals.”

Following the speech, the Jiya Theatre Group performed a play titled “Yekta,” depicting the martyr’s resistance, life, and journey.

Additional theatrical performances were also presented, including: “Mama Toni, Pendname, Tola Kezî, Êş û Hêvî.”

Further performances are scheduled to take place on March 29 in the city of Hasaka.

It is worth noting that World Theatre Day was established on March 27, 1961, by the International Theatre Institute affiliated with UNESCO, with the aim of highlighting the importance of theatre as a means of cultural expression and promoting dialogue among peoples. The occasion is marked by theatrical performances and cultural events worldwide.
