Qamishlo marks centenary of its founding

The celebration opened with a minute of silence in tribute to the martyrs, followed by an opening performance by a brass band.

Qamishlo Municipality Co-Chair Berivan Omar is scheduled to deliver a welcoming speech highlighting the city’s historical significance and its role in coexistence and cultural diversity.

Qamishlo District Director Cihan Hossam will also speak about residents’ role in building and developing the city over the past decades, while Abdul Hafiz Kellesh will deliver a speech on behalf of the transitional government, addressing Qamishlo’s history and its role in the Syrian social fabric.

Bishop Maurice Amsih is also scheduled to speak on behalf of the Syriac Diocese, while Father Hagop Nerses Barsoumian will represent the Armenian Orthodox Church and speak about the values of brotherhood and coexistence that characterize the city.

Artistic and Folk Performances

The celebration’s program includes artistic performances by Adnan Said, Hovik, Sharif Omari, Asaad Zaki, Nisreen Botan, Farhad Kurdi and Jadar Zakhoy.

The Martyr Walat Dance Troupe, Armenian Dance Troupe and Botan Dance Troupe will also present folk performances, alongside a theatrical show.

The program will also feature a documentary film showcasing key stages in Qamishlo’s history, from its founding a century ago to the present day.

The event will include an honoring ceremony for a number of well-known figures from the city, both living and deceased, in recognition of their contributions to cultural, social and public-service fields. Writers and intellectuals who contributed to documenting Qamishlo’s history and collective memory will also be honored.

The celebrations will conclude with popular and folk performances involving residents, marking the city’s centenary and celebrating its cultural and social diversity.
