Protests in rural Damascus towns demand release of detainees

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the town of Zakia, in the Damascus countryside, witnessed an influx of dozens of residents, whose origin from Zakia, al-Deirkhabiya, and al-Maqilibiya gathering at the Charitable Association Square. They were preparing to organize a peaceful march toward the Ministry of Interior building in Damascus to demand the release of their sons, who have been detained since the early months of what the residents describe as the "liberation of Syria."

The SOHR noted that an atmosphere of tension prevails among the residents, who reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to their sons' rights and their rejection of their continued detention in the absence of legal clarifications or clear judicial procedures. They emphasized that their mobilization aims to exert peaceful pressure to uncover the fate of the detainees and to put an end to the ongoing issue of arbitrary arrests.

The Observatory further highlighted that the participants raised direct demands for the immediate release of their sons. They argued that their continued detention, despite the passage of many months raises serious questions regarding their fate and the identities of the entities responsible for their arrest, amidst escalating calls for the issue to be addressed in a transparent and just manner.

This mobilization takes place against the backdrop of growing popular discontent across several areas of the Damascus countryside, amid increasing demands to resolve the issue of detainees and to guarantee their legal rights a sentiment that underscores the critical need for the relevant authorities to adhere to the principles of justice and the rule of law.
