Protest marks first anniversary of July nassacres in Sweida

A protest was organized in Sweida today on the occasion of the first anniversary of the July massacres committed against the people of Sweida by the Syrian interim government forces. It was attended by a number of victims’ families, displaced persons, and activists. Participants held banners and chanted slogans calling for recognition of the victims and the achievement of justice, as well as the return of displaced residents to their towns and villages.

Citizen Bayan Azzi, a witness to the massacres and brother of one of the victims, said that what happened left “deep wounds” in the hearts of the people, stressing that the massacre remains an unforgettable day and that the demand for truth and justice will continue.

Political activist Mithna Al-Hanawi stated that the consequences of the July massacres are still ongoing, noting that thousands of displaced people have been unable to return to their homes after one year. He called for solutions that ensure the return of residents to their villages and towns.

He also called for revealing the fate of the missing and addressing the effects of killings and displacement, pointing to information regarding large numbers of missing persons and mass graves.

Participants emphasized their continued efforts to document violations and pursue those responsible through legal channels, considering justice the essential path to restoring the rights of victims and their families.

The protest concluded with messages stressing the importance of strengthening values of justice and humanity, preserving human dignity, and continuing to demand the return of displaced persons and the disclosure of the fate of the missing.
