On October 10, 2023, an international campaign was launched in 74 centers around the world under the slogan “Freedom for Abdullah Ocalan, a political solution to the Kurdish issue,” to combat the torture regime practiced against leader Abdullah Ocalan in Imrali.

Professor Norman Beach, who participated in the campaign, spoke to ANHA agency about the issue.

In Abdullah Ocalan's views, there is no war, but there is discussion'

Norman Beach mentioned his meeting with Leader Abdullah Ocalan for the first time in Damascus in 1996, and said: “At that time we discussed democratic confederation. Abdullah Ocalan’s opinion is that war does not end with war, but rather ends only with negotiation. In order to save lives and create conditions to achieve peace, stopping the wars in Ukraine and Palestine is possible through the desire for a ceasefire.”

‘All procedures in Imrali are against the law’

International law expert Norman Beach noted: “The European Court of Human Rights has condemned the trials and punishments against Abdullah Ocalan 3 times during the last ten years as unfair, and also condemned the prison conditions as a violation, and it was determined that Articles 5 and 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights had been violated in a way that was unfair.” But unfortunately, it is not possible to implement the decisions of the European Union Human Rights Court. That is why European countries must take steps that have not been taken so far."

'International resistance against isolation'

Norman Beach noted that the “Freedom for Abdullah Ocalan, Political Solution to the Kurdish Question” campaign demonstrated international resistance against isolation. He continued: "The campaign showed that Abdullah Ocalan is now known outside the borders of Kurdistan and in the world, and is being defended against the interests of the state surrounding Turkey. This step would strengthen the resistance and thwart the Turkish state's efforts to keep this issue out of public opinion."

'We must intervene seriously against the Turkish state'

Professor Norman Beach noted that: “Participating in this campaign again to break the isolation and achieve the freedom of Abdullah Ocalan, has shown that there is widespread support in almost all European countries. There is no acceptance of such serious violations of the law anywhere. Since all European countries follow these laws in their constitutions, so they must seriously intervene with the Turkish government and insist on implementing these laws.”

'Everyone must do everything they can for the physical freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan'

Norman pointed out: “In order to take serious steps against the Turkish state, citizens must call on their governments and urge them to quickly implement the laws, customs and principles in their societies. They swear to enforce these rules in front of the media, but their policies are double, so this matter must be put to an end.”
