Prisoner of Freedom released after 33 years

Dijwar Ismail, who was imprisoned in North Kurdistan by the Turkish occupation state in 1991, has been released after 33 years.

The prisoner of freedom, Dijwar Nasri Ismail (Ridwan Ismail), born in the village of Sanjaq Saadoun in the city of Amuda, was arrested on September 17, 1991, in North Kurdistan by the Turkish occupation state.

As a result of his struggle within the ranks of the Kurdish liberation movement in North Kurdistan, Turkish authorities sentenced him to life imprisonment.

According to Turkish state laws, prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment are eligible for release after serving 30 years. However, although Dijwar Nasri Ismail’s sentence officially ended on September 5, 2021, the prison administration postponed his release for three years under various pretexts.

According to information obtained from Dijwar’s family, he was finally released after spending 33 years in T-type Prison No. 1 in the city of Afyonkarahisar, Turkey.

Dijwar Ismail, now 64 years old and suffering from multiple illnesses, has been transferred to a migration center as his family eagerly awaits his return home.
