Politician calls for Kurdish unity amid Iran developments

With the expansion of the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran, analyses are increasing that suggest it will be difficult to overthrow the Iranian regime through air strikes alone, despite attacks targeting military sites and vital areas intended to cripple its military capabilities.

At the same time, expectations are rising that events could develop into a ground intervention aimed at changing or overthrowing the regime. This has drawn attention to opposition forces inside Iran, particularly Kurdish parties.

In this context, ANHA agency conducted an interview with Fathallah Hasso, a member of the Political Bureau of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Party, to discuss the developments in Iran and their implications for the Kurds there.

Historic Opportunity

Hasso said that the situation in Iran in general, and the situation of the Kurdish people there in particular, is an important issue. He noted that Kurdistan was divided about a hundred years ago into four parts between Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey through international agreements.

He added that previous generations of Kurds believed that weakening the states controlling parts of Kurdistan could open the way for Kurds to obtain their rights. This became evident during periods of state collapse in Iraq and Syria, where Kurds managed to achieve certain political gains.

He also pointed out that Iran may witness similar circumstances, explaining that the reasons behind the attacks on it are still not entirely clear—whether they are related to its nuclear program, its ballistic missile system, an attempt to overthrow the regime, or a combination of these factors.

Hasso stressed that Kurds in Iran must prepare for various developments and affirmed that Kurdish unity is the fundamental step at this stage. He also noted that the recent rapprochement among the six Iranian Kurdish parties is a positive step that deserves respect and appreciation.

Need for Guarantees

He added that all possibilities remain open in the coming phase, including the potential involvement of Kurdish forces in the war. However, he emphasized the need for guarantees to prevent the repetition of what happened in other Kurdish regions due to contradictory U.S. policies and international agreements that came at the expense of the Kurdish people and their sacrifices.

Hasso also called on Kurdish political forces to deal cautiously with the policies and shifting interests of states, stressing that such interests often go beyond moral considerations and the rights of peoples.

In conclusion, Hasso stressed that achieving Kurdish unity across Kurdistan has become more possible than ever during this stage, given what he described as the weakening of the Kurds’ adversaries. He called for holding conferences in each part of Kurdistan to form political references representing Kurdish parliaments to make decisions, ultimately leading to a comprehensive Kurdish national congress that would establish a joint political, military, and economic strategy to face the major transformations in the region.
