Journalist and writer Hussein Aykol passed away in the early hours of today due to a cerebral hemorrhage he suffered at his home in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

Journalist Hussein Aykol, one of the symbols of press freedom, was found unconscious in his home on the night of October 14 as a result of a brain hemorrhage. He was transferred to the hospital for treatment but passed away after two months and 17 days of medical care.

Aykol, who dedicated more than three decades to journalistic work, is considered one of the most prominent voices in free media. He participated in founding the newspapers Özgür Ülke and Özgür Gündem and worked for several other newspapers, leaving a clear mark on the path of independent journalism.
