Three Syrian officials told Reuters that the man who attacked U.S. military personnel in the city of Palmyra in central Syria earlier today was a member of the General Security forces.

Reuters also quoted a spokesperson for the Interior Ministry of Syria’s transitional government as saying that the attacker did not hold a leadership position within the security forces, without clarifying whether he was a lower-ranking member.

In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump mourned the victims of the Palmyra attack in Syria this evening, saying: “We lost three great citizens in an ambush in Syria.”

Trump pledged to respond to ISIS mercenaries, stating: “If our forces are attacked again in Syria, we will respond.”
