NE Syria’s convoy returns after fires extinguished, receives government thanks

 The support convoy from the NE Syria region returned to its stations after authorities affiliated with the Syrian transitional government announced full containment of the forest fires in the Syrian coastal region, before the convoy reached its destination, according to the media office of the Administration.

The convoy, affiliated with the Union of Municipalities in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of NE Syria, had departed on Wednesday morning, loaded with equipment and specialized personnel in response to the recent wave of fires in rural Latakia. The move was a gesture of national solidarity and readiness to provide logistical and on-the-ground support.

The Autonomous Administration stated that a delegation from the Damascus government received the convoy in the city of Salamiyah in eastern Hama countryside, where the convoy was informed that the fires had been extinguished. Its members were officially thanked on behalf of the Minister of Interior, who appreciated the rapid response and spirit of solidarity.

In a statement, the Autonomous Administration affirmed: “Being ready to provide support to any area in Syria and to all our people is a national duty. The Administration will continue to stand by Syrians in facing disasters, regardless of their geographic or political location.”

In a related development, the European Union announced the activation of the Copernicus Earth observation system via satellites to support efforts in combating the fires in the Syrian coast, particularly in rural Latakia, which experienced a wave of widespread blazes.

European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, stated in a post on the “X” platform that “the fires have displaced thousands of people and caused significant damage to infrastructure and essential services in rural areas, under difficult humanitarian conditions.” She added that the activation of Copernicus aims to support the local response through satellite imagery and accurate information.
