Nadine Maenza slams participation of Hevrin Khalaf’s killer at "Victory Conference"

Nadine Maenza, Executive Director of the International Religious Freedom Secretariat and a researcher at the Wilson Center, has strongly criticized the presence of Hatim Abu Shaqra (Ahmad Ihsan Fayad Al-Hays), the leader of Ahrar Al-Sharqiya  and the perpetrator of the assassination of Hevrin Khalaf, at the "Victory Conference" held in Damascus on Wednesday.

In statements posted on her social media accounts, Maenza expressed astonishment at the inclusion of Abu Shaqra—who remains sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department—at an event celebrating victory. She underscored that Abu Shaqra was blacklisted for his involvement in grave human rights violations, including the trafficking of Yazidi women and children, and that Ahrar Al-Sharqiya has been accused of assassinating Khalaf during Turkey’s 2019 military incursion into northern Syria.

The U.S. Treasury Department had previously sanctioned Abu Shaqra, citing Ahrar Al-Sharqiya’s record of human rights abuses, including the extrajudicial killing of Hevrin Khalaf, a prominent Kurdish politician and Secretary-General of the Future Syria Party, along with her bodyguards in October 2019.

Maenza emphasized that while the world hopes for Syria’s success, genuine progress is only possible through the full inclusion of the country’s rich religious and ethnic diversity.

On Facebook, she further noted that she had the honor of meeting Khalaf’s family and members of the Future Syria Party, which she described as a movement striving to foster unity among Arabs, Kurds, and Christians.

Meanwhile, Soad Mustafa, the mother of Hevrin Khalaf, voiced her outrage over the participation of her daughter’s killer in the conference. In an exclusive statement to ANHA agency, she called for his immediate expulsion from Syria and demanded that he be held accountable for his crimes.
