Meeting in Damascus between al-Shaibani, Russian delegation

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani received a Russian delegation headed by Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak today at the People's Palace in Damascus, on an unannounced visit.

During the meeting, al-Shaibani stressed that his country wants to see Russia clearly stand by Syria's unity, adding: "A weak Syria means increased opportunities for chaos and terrorism in the region."

Novak announced that Russia and Syria are entering a "new historical phase of relations" built on mutual respect and equal cooperation, noting that Moscow is seriously considering strengthening economic, military, and political cooperation with Damascus.

Novak indicated that the president of the transitional government, Ahmed al-Sharaa, will participate in a Russian-Arab summit scheduled to be held in Moscow in October.

According to SANA, the discussions covered bilateral cooperation in the fields of defense, economy, and energy, in addition to reconstruction.

Media outlets had previously reported the arrival of a Russian plane at Damascus International Airport carrying a high-ranking military and political delegation from Moscow, on a surprise visit not included in the announced agenda.

In a related context, Novak revealed in statements reported by Reuters that Russia and Qatar are discussing providing humanitarian aid to Syria, in addition to contributing to the rehabilitation of the energy sector. He explained that the talks aim to strengthen basic infrastructure to support the reconstruction process.

This comes after major American companies, including Baker Hughes, Hunt Energy, and Argent LNG, announced the preparation of a comprehensive plan to rebuild Syria's oil, gas, and electricity generation sectors, following US President Donald Trump's decision last June to lift sanctions imposed on Damascus.

The plan is expected to include oil and gas exploration and extraction operations, in addition to electricity generation projects. Gulf companies also rushed to sign agreements in the fields of energy, infrastructure and ports.
