Mazlum Abdi: Nour al-Din Sofi is symbol of peoples’ unity, his legacy remains in revolution

At the funeral ceremony held today at the Martyrs’ Shrine of March 12 in Qamishlo, Jazira region, Mazlum Abdi delivered a speech recalling the martyr’s struggle.

Abdi emphasized that Nour al-Din Sofi was among the earliest participants in the revolutionary work since the 1990s, having joined the struggle 35 years ago and continued his efforts until his martyrdom. He said: “Comrade Nour al-Din fought across all parts of Kurdistan, roaming the mountains and Kurdish regions for 24 years. He rose to the highest ranks within the guerrilla forces and was known as a courageous and prominent field commander. After 24 years of struggle in the Kurdistan mountains, he joined the Rojava Revolution in 2013 at the request of his comrades and all of us, until he earned the honor of martyrdom. His revolutionary imprint was present in all the institutions of the revolution, and among us he was known by his nom de guerre, ‘Adil.’”

Abdi added that Sofi’s impact remains present in all institutions, in the awareness of the people, and in the bonds of brotherhood among the components. He highlighted Sofi’s prominent role in resisting ISIS mercenaries since 2017, noting his participation in battles from Raqqa to Deir ez-Zor, and his position as the field commander in the Battle of al-Baghouz.

He continued: “Nour al-Din was a fundamental pillar in the resistance of our time and was present in all its stages. We can say that the North and East Syria revolution witnessed his presence on all its fronts and battlefields. We appreciate his contributions to strengthening unity among peoples; he was Arab with Arabs, Kurd with Kurds, Syriac with Syriacs, and this is one of the reasons for the revolution’s success.”

Abdi stressed the continuation of work and struggle in loyalty to the blood of the martyrs, affirming that the Syrian Democratic Forces and the institutions that Sofi was part of will continue their role in building a new Syria.

Addressing the Arab attendees in Arabic, Abdi said: “Comrade Nour al-Din believed in the unity of people, and his relationship with Arabs was strong. He was highly trusted by Arab fighters and was among the first leaders who contributed to establishing the Autonomous Administration. We are proud of him as a comrade in the struggle.”

He concluded his speech saying: “In the presence of the martyrs, we say to our great leader and dear comrade Adil, Nour al-Din Sofi: We are proud of you; your comrades and your people are proud of you. You have departed in body, but your banner will remain raised, and we pledge victory to you. Farewell, dear comrade Nour al-Din, farewell martyr.
