Leader Ocalan's freedom is key for lasting peace

As part of the campaign launched by women's movements in North and East Syria following the historic call by leader Abdullah Ocalan on February 27 for peace and a democratic society, participants believe that the Turkish authorities are disregarding the appeal.

Hindia Bakir, one of the participants from Afrin, stated: “We salute the family and comrades of the struggler Serya Önder, and we affirm that the women and peoples of Rojava hold great hope that the call for peace will be heard.”

She added: “ Önder made great efforts to fulfill this appeal, yet the Turkish state continues to systematically ignore the call of leader Abdullah Ocalan. His physical freedom is indispensable for achieving a just peace. Until the call for peace is realized in practice, we will continue our struggle without retreat.”

Jihan Darwish, for her part, saluted all struggling peoples and recalled the sacrifices of the martyrs of the Kurdistan Freedom Movement. She said:

“ Önder was part of the Imrali delegation and worked alongside his comrades to convey leader Abdullah Ocalan’s message aimed at ending conflicts in the Middle East and Turkey and putting an end to wars and chaos.”

Jihan noted that two months have passed since the call was made, yet the Turkish state has taken no serious steps so far. She stated that the first step toward peace begins with lifting the isolation imposed on leader Abdullah Ocalan, emphasizing:

“We must not remain silent in the face of this restriction, and we will continue our struggle until peace is achieved.”

Meanwhile, Asmahan Ahmad described the conditions in Imrali Prison as “a disgrace,” and added: “The restrictions continue. The project presented by leader Abdullah Ocalan is one of peace and coexistence.”

Asmahan stressed that the peace call he issued must be implemented practically on the ground to attain true peace, stating:

“Leader Abdullah Ocalan is not only the leader of the Kurdish people, but a leader of humanity. Everyone must act to secure his physical freedom. We will continue our struggle until we see him free among his people.”
