Lavrov: We support Kurdish representation in new Syrian government

During his meeting with Syrian Transitional Government Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani in Moscow, Lavrov reiterated Russia’s interest in Kurdish representation in a future Syrian government, and stressed Moscow's backing for an inclusive national dialogue across all components and sects of Syrian society.

Lavrov noted that the two sides had agreed to establish a field hospital in Suwayda as part of Russia’s humanitarian support. He also stated that Damascus is “taking important steps to ensure the safety of Russian diplomats,” adding that Moscow is ready to assist Syria in overcoming current challenges.

The Russian minister renewed his call for the lifting of all sanctions imposed on the Syrian people, describing them as an obstacle to economic and living-condition recovery efforts. He also expressed hope that “the Syrian people will overcome the crises they face and that stability will return to the country.”

For his part, al-Shibani said that “a large part of the Syrian people still carry wounds from the past period, and responsibility must be acknowledged.” He stressed that “foreign relations were used against the Syrian people, but the situation will change.”

Al-Shibani revealed an agreement to form a joint Syrian-Russian ministerial committee to review previous agreements, praising the “significant openness from Russia.”

He also claimed that the government is committed to national dialogue, affirming that “the Syrian government guarantees the rights of all minorities and will ensure representation of all components of the Syrian people in parliament.” He added that “the state has issued clear directives to protect all sects and prevent any harm to civilians.”
