Large wildfires erupt north of Zerkan amid fears of landmine explosions

Large wildfires have broken out in the vicinity of four villages north of the town of Zerkan, raising fears that landmines planted around the villages could detonate as the flames spread. Firefighting teams are carrying out intensive operations to contain and extinguish the blazes.

Large wildfires broke out on Friday in agricultural land surrounding the villages of Khidrawi, Harmalah, Tell Harmal, and Mushairfa, north of the town of Zerkan, spreading across extensive farmland in the area.

Firefighting teams from Zerkan, Tell Tamer, and Derbasiyah were dispatched to the affected areas and continue efforts to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to additional farmland and nearby areas.

Fire suppression operations are being carried out amid concerns that landmines and unexploded remnants of war scattered around the villages could detonate, posing a serious risk to firefighters and local residents assisting in the response.

Fire crews continue their work on the scene till the time of preparing this report. The cause of the fires has not yet been determined, and the full extent of the damage and losses remains unknown.
