Kovan Keno criticizes Syrian parliament formation, participation of few Kurdish parties

Objections to the appointment of parliament (People’s Assembly) members are increasing. 28 political parties and movements in Rojava have voiced their opposition to the appointment process.

Kovan Keno, Secretary of the Kurdish Democratic Roj Party in Syria, expressed his dissatisfaction with the way parliament members were appointed, explaining that these appointments show that the interim government does not view the Kurds as an indigenous component of the region.

He said: “The Kurdish people make up more than 20% of Syria's population. When such appointments are made, the number of seats allocated to the Kurds in parliament is extremely small, making it seem as though the Kurdish people do not exist.” He added: “The Kurds were given a very limited number of seats, and this does not represent a solution. If the Damascus government is sincere with its people, it should convene a national conference to build a decentralized and multi-ethnic Syria.”

He also described the participation of some Kurdish parties in the appointment process, following understandings with the interim government, as unfortunate. He said: “Many Kurdish parties did not participate in this process, but unfortunately some Kurdish parties did. This is the subject of our objection. We wanted all Kurds either to participate together or to boycott it together. Here, we are showing our weakness. The Kurdish Unity Conference was held some time ago, but in this way Kurdish unity is being weakened.”
