Jordan: Two gunmen killed after foiling attempt to cross from Syria

The Jordanian Armed Forces stated on Saturday that soldiers killed two gunmen after thwarting an infiltration attempt on Friday across the border with Syria.

In a statement, the armed forces said: "The border guards in the Eastern Military Zone managed at dawn on Friday to thwart an attempt by a group of armed individuals to illegally infiltrate through the Jordanian border."

The statement continued: "The rules of engagement were applied after they were spotted, leading to the killing of two of them following an exchange of gunfire, while the rest of the group retreated into Syrian territory."

For years, the Jordanian army has implemented strict measures on its northern and eastern borders, especially with Syria, amid increasing infiltration and smuggling attempts involving weapons and narcotics.

The Jordanian armed forces have intensified their use of surveillance systems, night monitoring, and armed patrols, and have repeatedly reported clashes with infiltrators and smugglers, during which large quantities of narcotics were seized.
