Israeli army targets new sites on Syrian Coast

Powerful explosions rocked the port of Tartus and several areas along the Syrian coast, while the Israeli army announced in a statement that it had struck "military sites belonging to the former Syrian regime" in the city of Qardaha.

"A short while ago, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out an airstrike in the Qardaha area of Syria on a military site that was used to store weaponry belonging to the ousted Syrian regime," the Israeli army spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, wrote on his Telegram channel.

He added: "In light of recent developments in the region, it was decided to target infrastructure within the site."

He continued: "The IDF continues to monitor the situation on the Syrian front and will take all necessary actions to protect the citizens of Israel."

Meanwhile, Syria’s Al-Watan newspaper reported: "A loud explosion was heard near the city of Tartus to the north, with smoke rising near the Blata Gharbiya Bridge. There are expectations that an Israeli attack has targeted a military site near the Tartus-Baniyas highway at Blata Gharbiya."

Israel has taken control of the buffer zone inside Syrian territory and has been striking military targets across the country since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Israeli fighter jets carried out more than 500 airstrikes on Syrian military sites between Assad’s downfall on December 8 and the end of 2024.
