IRGC announces targeting al-Tanf base in Syria

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it carried out an attack targeting the al-Tanf military base in southeastern Syria, saying the operation was in response to the killing of Iranian soldiers in the city of Iranshahr. Tehran affirmed that it would continue retaliating against attacks targeting its forces.

Iranian state media reported that the IRGC announced an attack on a special operations command center in Syria’s al-Tanf area. In a statement broadcast by Iranian television via Telegram, the IRGC said the operation targeted what it described as the “enemy’s special operations command center” in the area.

The IRGC said the strike was carried out in retaliation for the deaths of Iranian soldiers in recent U.S. strikes on the city of Iranshahr.

The Iranian announcement comes months after the United States announced in February that it would withdraw its forces from al-Tanf base and hand it over to Syrian authorities.

Meanwhile, the IRGC also said, according to state media reports, that Iran still maintains full control over the Strait of Hormuz, warning that continued U.S. attacks would lead to a halt in oil and gas exports through the strategic waterway.
