The objective, Abdul Fadel noted, is to liberate thousands of detained fighters of various nationalities currently held in the facility.

In remarks to the Iraqi newspaper Al-Sabah, published on Monday, al-Basri stated that “approximately 1,900 Iraqis are currently held in detention at al-Hol camp due to their affiliation with the terrorist organization in Iraq.”

He further emphasized that the situation in Iraq differs significantly from that in Syria and North Africa, where a larger number of ISIS affiliates were raised and radicalized within local communities. “The National Security Service maintains comprehensive intelligence and surveillance capabilities concerning all aspects of the terrorist organization,” he said. “This includes the capacity to identify and target ISIS elements even beyond Iraq’s borders.”

The Iraqi official also praised the role of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), stating that their control over parts of Syrian territory effectively restricts ISIS’s ability to regroup or regain operational strength. “Their efforts have deprived the organization of any strategic maneuverability and placed its remnants in increasingly desperate and confined conditions,” he concluded.
